The Mechanics of Stock Donations
Donating stock instead of cash, benefits both parties. If the stock has increased in value from the time of purchase, the owner can avoid paying the capital gains tax by donating the security to another party. When the security is being donated to a charitable organization, the total amount will still be eligible for a tax deduction.
Your Charitable Tax Deduction: For tax purposes, your deduction will equal the average of the high and low on the date of the gift. The gift date is the day the securities were transferred to Jewish LearningWorks.
Amount Credited to your Gift/Pledge: Jewish LearningWorks credits your donor account with the amount we receive from the sale of the stock, net any fees.
Jewish LearningWorks is a tax exempt organization as described in Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code; EIN 94-1167406.
