Chana Kronfeld is the Bernie H. Williams Professor of Comparative, Hebrew and Yiddish Literature at the University of California, Berkeley, specializing in modernist poetry and translation studies. Her On the Margins of Modernism: Decentering Literary Dynamics won the MLA Scaglione Prize for the best book in Comparative Literary Studies. She is the author most recently of The Full Severity of Compassion: The Poetry of Yehuda Amichai. With the late Chana Bloch she translated Yehuda Amichai’s Open Closed Open (PEN Translation Prize) as well as selections from his early poetry for Robert Alter’s The Poetry of Yehuda Amichai, and Hovering at a Low Altitude: The Poetry of Dahlia Ravikovitch for an annotated Norton edition. Kronfeld received the Akavyahu Lifetime Achievement Award for her research on Hebrew and Yiddish poetry. She is currently working on a book titled The Land as Woman: The Afterlife of a Biblical Metaphor.
