Julie Zigoris will lead a discussion of Moscow-born author Paul Goldberg’s acclaimed 2016 novel, The Yid.

With elements of Shakespeare and Yiddish theater, a rag-tag group decides to assassinate Stalin just before the 1953 Soviet pogroms are to begin. This satirical mad-cap adventure tale effectively blends historical events, family stories, and ingenious imagination.

Julie Draskoczy Zigoris holds a PhD in Russian literature and was named a Mellon Scholar in the Humanities at Stanford University. She has taught literature at the University of Pittsburgh, Stanford University, San Quentin prison, and the Jewish Community High School of the Bay. Her first book, Belomor: Criminality and Creativity in Stalin’s Gulag, was published by Academic Studies Press in 2014.
