Samuel Torjman Thomas will explore different areas of Moroccan and Algerian Jewish musical life, including liturgical, para-liturgical, and secular performance in a hybrid lecture–demonstration.

Samuel Torjman Thomas, PhD, is a professor of ethnomusicology, Jewish studies, interdisciplinary studies, and Sephardic studies at the City University of New York. A vocalist and multi-instrumentalist (saxophone, clarinet, oud, nay), he is the founder and artistic director of ASEFA and the New York Andalus Ensemble. He is also a faculty member for both the ALEPH and Academy of Jewish Religion cantorial programs, and is director of musical arts at the Sephardic Center in Brooklyn.
