Focusing on mid-century works from Barnett Newman, Adolph Gottlieb, and Lee Krasner, this program will explore how Judaism and spirituality informed these artists’ processes and oeuvres, situated in the historical background of Abstract Expressionism. This truly American movement provided an outlet for artists seeking to engage spiritually and artistically with the non-objective.
Alex Lyon is a part-time art history instructor at City College of San Francisco and the Youth Education Program Director at Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills. Lyon holds a joint BA in the history of art and architecture and French from Miami University and an MA in art history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Program made possible, in part, by Jane and Michael Rice.
