Introducing excerpts from several provocative books, this lively community conversation will explore the impact of our own family secrets. In his powerful book The Color of Water (1996), James McBride uncovers his mother’s Jewish past and begins to understand his own racial complexities. Dani Shapiro’s memoir Inheritance (2019) chronicles her discovery that the man who raised her wasn’t her biological father, sparking a profound reevaluation of her Jewish identity. Evan Imber-Black’s The Secret Life of Families (1998) explores the complexity of secrets and offers ways to think about them. There will be an opportunity to share your own secret.

Program made possible, in part, by Judy Baston.
