In his powerful book The Color of Water (1996), James McBride uncovers his mother’s Jewish past and begins to understand his own racial complexities. Dani Shapiro’s memoir Inheritance (2019) chronicles her discovery that the man who raised her wasn’t her biological father, sparking a profound reevaluation of her Jewish identity. Evan Imber-Black’s The Secret Life of Families (1998) explores the complexity of secrets and offers ways to think about them. Excerpts from these texts will set the stage for a lively conversation exploring the impact of our own family secrets. There will be an opportunity to share your own secret. Moderated by Jim Van Buskirk in conversation with independent scholar Lynne Gerber.
Program made possible, in part, by Judy Baston.
