Building Jewish Connection by Celebrating Diversity

How can teaching about Jewish diversity invigorate student engagement, dialogue, and connection? Why is learning and teaching about Jewish diversity critical and how should we approach it in Jewish educational settings? Join Be’chol Lashon and the Jewish Language Project to learn about the whys, whats, and hows of expanding ideas of Jewish peoplehood, including racial, ethnic, and linguistic diversity. Combine theory and practice as you explore best-practices, learn from case studies, ideate with colleagues, and come away with applicable classroom resources.

Program Details:

  • Aimed at: Teachers and instructional leaders working with students in grades 4 and above. We particularly encourage teaching teams to attend together.
  • When: Tuesday, August 11, 2026 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Doors open at 12:45 pm.
  • Format: One-time, in-person learning.
  • Location: The Brandeis School of San Francisco (655 Brotherhood Way San Francisco, CA 94132). Free parking is available at the large lot, downhill, to the right of the school.
  • Participant fee: Register for $36 and include additional participants from your organization for $18 each (50% off). All trainings programs at Jewish LearningWorks are subsidized by our generous donors. If the participant fee is a hardship, please contact us to register with a fee adjustment.
  • Led by: Lindsey Newman, Director of Education at Be'chol Lashon, and Janine Okmin, Assistant Director at the HUC Jewish Language Project.

More About Our Facilitators:

Lindsey Newman has over a decade of experience working to advance racial justice in the Jewish community. Lindsey serves as the Director of Education and Training for Be’chol Lashon, an organization that advocates for the racial, ethnic and cultural diversity of the Jewish community. Lindsey participated in the 2016 Selah Leadership Cohort, was a 2018 Fellow of the Ruskay Institute for Jewish Professional Leadership and received her B.S. degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University. Lindsey serves on the board of Upstart.

Janine Okmin is the Assistant Director of the Jewish Language Project, where she specializes in developing educational programming and partnerships. A career educator and museum professional, she has developed museum content as Director of Learning and Museum Experience at the Bay Area Discovery Museum, Associate Director of Education at the Contemporary Jewish Museum, and Associate Manager of Learning Through Art at the Guggenheim Museum. Janine is currently the Program Director for the Jewish Writers’ Initiative’s Digital Storytellers Lab, a fellowship for digital media creatives. She holds a BA in Drama from Northwestern University and an MA in Arts Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University.
