This presentation will provide a lively history of the golem, enhanced with photos of Prague where the legend is grounded, as well as illustrations from several novels and comics featuring golems. Professor Baer will discuss some of the contemporary appropriations of the legend written about in her book The Golem Redux. She will share images from a recent exhibition on the golem at the Jewish Museum in Paris, and will conclude with comments on how Helene Wecker’s The Hidden Palace (this year’s One Bay One Book selection) fits into the golem tradition.
